Mini Cactus Garden
I’ve been on a huge succulent craze lately…if you haven’t noticed already. So, I had a brilliant idea to make a little mini cactus garden! A cactus is so easy to take care of—you only need to water them once a week. How much easier can it get?? This garden turned out to be awesome and I couldn’t wait to come home from my vacation and share it with you guys!
What you need:
• Cactus/succulent assortment of your choice
• Wooden box with glass sides—find similar here
• Metallic gold spray paint
• Clear acrylic sealer—matte finish
• Painters tape
• Blade
• Plastic container—this will go inside the box for extra protection. I was able to use a sandwich meat container available from the grocery store.
• Aquarium gravel—smaller rocks
• Cactus palm and citrus potting mix
How to make your mini cactus garden:
Step 1: Tape up all sides of the glass, including the inside. This will protect the glass from overspray. Use a blade to trim off the excess tape from the glass.
Step 2: Using the metallic gold spray paint, apply 1 coat over the entire outside of the wooden box. Let dry for at least 60min, then re-apply a 2nd coat.
Step 3: Once the 2nd coat has dried, use the spray to coat the inside. Let dry for at least 60min, then re-apply a 2nd coat.
Step 4: Apply 1 coat of the clear acrylic sealer to the inside and outside of the wooden box. This will help protect the wood from water damage. While letting the box dry, move onto the next step.
Step 5: Use the blade to cut the rim of the plastic container. This will be going inside the box to help collect water.
Step 6: After clear acrylic sealer has dried, remove painters tape from all sides of the box.
Step 7: First, pour enough aquarium gravel into the box to cover the bottom of the box. Then place the plastic container on top of the gravel and pour gravel into the container to cover the bottom of it.
Step 8: Place potting mix in the box to cover halfway up the base of the cacti. Carve out a circle for each cactus, placing the plant into that space. After the cacti have been placed in the box, cover the remaining bases of the plants with potting soil.
Step 9: After spreading out and making the potting mix level, place a thin layer of pebbles on top to cover up the potting soil.
Step 10: Place wherever you like for a nice addition to any sunlit room!
This mini cactus garden was so fun to make! Let me know how yours turns out! I can’t wait to hear all about it.
