Homemade Cotton Candy
Who doesn’t love cotton candy?! Unfortunately, I didn’t have a cotton candy machine so I looked up a recipe online and found this one. It was easy to make, but a tad messy. After making it, I was pretty impressed with the outcome. With Labor Day weekend fast approaching, I thought this would be an awesome desert for all of the cookouts going on!
What you need:
• 2 cups of sugar
• 1/2 cup of corn syrup
• 1/2 cup of water
• 1 teaspoon strawberry extract (or flavor of choice)
• Food coloring
• Straws
• Candy thermometer (If you don’t have a candy thermometer, I was able to get away with using a meat thermometer that reached up to 450 degrees)
• Whisk (cut with wire cutters as shown in “Step 1” here)
• Bamboo skewers
How to make this sugary treat:
Step 1: Pour 2 cups of sugar, 1/2 cup of corn syrup, 1/2 cup of water, and 1 teaspoon of strawberry extract into pot and mix.
Step 2: Place pot onto burner on high and whisk until temperature reaches 300 degrees on your candy thermometer. While waiting for cotton candy to reach desired temperature, place skewers under a heavy object to support them.
Step 3: Once desired temperature of 300 degrees has been reached, take pot off of burner and drop food coloring into mix until color of choice has been made.
Step 4: Whisk until candy thickens enough for it to create a stringy effect when pulled out of pot.
Step 5: Sway whisk back and forth across skewers to create layers of cotton candy. Be sure to place a trash bag on floor under skewers to prevent getting candy onto the floor.
Step 6: Pull layers of candy off of skewers and wrap around straws.
Step 7: Enjoy your homemade cotton candy!
