Featured Artist Wooden Pencil Company & DIY Cane Frame Mat
I have had these beautiful pieces of artwork hanging up in our kitchen for a couple weeks now, and I am so happy to finally be able to sit down and write this post to share the artist with you all! I’ll also be sharing how you can make your own cane frame mat to dress up your artwork with. It’s actually extremely easy; so make sure you read until the end!
Wooden Pencil Company
I have the pleasure of knowing the artist Suwachi at Wooden Pencil Company from my previous job. She was one of the amazingly talented art directors there and it didn’t surprise me when I found out she has her own small business. Suwachi (I call her Sachi :)) is an artist and designer, and I’m happy I get to feature her here on the blog!
Suwachi is originally from Kyoto, Japan and a mom of 2 cats! She illustrates and sells her art of state fish, birds, cats, and dogs that are all beautifully hand drawn. What I love about her artwork is that behind her lovely illustrations there is an extra layer of detail within. If you look closely at each of them you’ll see a detailed map of the state it’s featuring.
As if her work couldn’t be any more wonderful—she also donates 10% of the sale proceeds to the American Bird Conservancy and National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. Suwachi’s life-long mission is to help save our great nature and everything in it through her art! I love that!
You can check her out on Instagram and find your state here on her website! B and I chose Maryland and Virginia because that’s where we’re from. I love that it adds a personal touch to our walls.
DIY Cane Frame Mat
I’ll be honest when I say I was pretty impressed on how well this frame turned out. I knew it was going to look good, but I am in love with the personal unique touch the cane added to the art and frame. What’s also great is how simple it is to make – you only need a few supplies!
Supplies needed:
• Cane material — I found this one on Amazon. Make sure you measure correctly!
• Art frame with mat
• Scissors
• Light colored pen — this one is optional. I was able to eyeball and mark where to cut the cane. Following the pattern made it simple enough for me to cut a straight line.
How to:
Step 1: Lay your cane material flat and place the mat from the art frame down. Mark each corner of the cane material where you need to cut. Make sure you mark the outer part of the frame as well as the inner.
Step 2: Cut the cane material. I found this part easy because you could just follow the pattern of the cane to keep a “straight” line.
Step 3: Now that the cane frame mat is cut out, you can place it into your art frame! First, place the cane material down, then the mat from the art frame, and then your artwork. I opted not to glue it down and honestly don’t think it’s necessary.
Step 4: Voila! You’re done! How beautiful does it look?!
Be sure to comment or tag me on Instagram if you make your own cane mat frame! I’d love to see it!!
