DIY Mint to Be Sugar Scrub
I had such an incredible time this weekend with my wonderful friends and family! One of my bridesmaids along with my sister threw me the best bridal shower yesterday, and it was everything I could’ve imagined it to be! Of course, I wanted to plan everything for this big event, but I knew I had to stay back and let them handle it. However, I had requested that I at least make the party favors; so of course I did and I had to share! They turned out lovely and I think everyone should make this at one point in their life! It makes the cutest/sweetest gift, and it’s unique in that it is personally made by you :] AND I have included a free printable to go with it too! Wahoo!!!

Please note: If you’d like this sticker tag to be customized with a name change, color change, etc., I have created an Etsy listing here. I’d be more than happy to make these changes for you.
What you need:
This recipe makes enough to fill about 20 of the mini jars that you see in the photo below.
• Jar(s)—4 oz. jars found here
• 2 cups of coconut oil
• 10 cups of sugar
• 4 tablespoons of mint extract
• 4 drops of green food coloring
• Silhouette Printable White Sticker Paper
• Mint to Be Sticker Tag Free Printable—the circles are 2 inches in diameter, allowing them to fit perfectly onto the lid (I used this 2″ puncher)

How to make your sugar scrub:
*recipe adapted from Love Grows Wild
Step 1: Using a large bowl, mix in your coconut oil, sugar, mint extract, and green food coloring. Stir until well mixed.
Step 2: Once sugar scrub is well mixed, place into jars.
Step 3: Place your “mint to be” sticker labels onto lid of jar and voilà! your “mint to be” sugar scrub is now complete!
I highly recommend making this sweet concoction. I scrubbed some on my hands after I made it and oh my goodness it makes your skin feel ah-mazing! It smells minty too!! This DIY recipe could not have been any better! Have you made sugar scrub before? I was thinking of making raspberry too, but this mint one was too good not to make first!

This looks great! I love making these kind of things myself!
Thanks Monique! Yes, it was pretty simple to make! It smells delish too :]
So I’m making these as we speak but I must be compacting them too much because my batch made 7.5 jars worth lol. I will end up tripling it to fill 20 jars, but loading it loosely seems like it’s not enough.
Hi Francesca!
Thanks for commenting! I did put these together the weekend of my bridal shower and I remember filling them loosely and didn’t compact. I had to fill 20 jars and I remember it being enough. Are you using 4 oz. jars?
Thanks for letting me know and giving me your feedback. I really appreciate it!
Where did you find the jars to put it in? I’m thinking about doing this for a baby shower!
Hi Seana!
That’s a great idea! I found these 4 oz. jars in-store at Michael’s. Here’s the direct link: http://www.michaels.com/ball-quilted-jelly-jar/M10258997.html
Hope this helps!

Amazon also has them. 🙂
What a great idea! How long does the sugar scrub keep?
Hi Linda! The sugar scrub should keep for a couple months as long as it is stored properly in the jar. Coconut oil usually has a long shelf life, but to get a better idea look at the “best-by” date on the jar of the coconut oil you purchase. Hopefully this helps!

My sisters bridal shower is at the end of May and I think this mint to be sugar scrub would be so perfect. I am wondering if the green from the food coloring stains your hands? Thanks so much. I am looking forward to making this.
Hi Amber! I loved this sugar scrub (quick and easy to make too)! I would use a spoon when mixing the ingredients, but once the ingredients are well mixed you really shouldn’t have a problem with the food color staining your hands. The food color is only adding a little tint of color to the scrub so if it is staining your hands you may have put too much. Best of luck with the planning!
–Marianela
NO! I just made it this past weekend for my sister’s bridal shower and purposely tested it BEFOREhand to make sure it didn’t stain my skin.
Hi Aimee!
Thank you for your feedback! I’m so happy you made the sugar scrub and everything turned out well for you! <3

I love the sugar scrub idea for my future daughter in laws wedding shower. How many jars does this recipe make?
Hi Sandy,
This recipe should make about a total of 20 of the 4 oz. jars that are loosely filled and not tightly compacted (I personally thought it would be better to get more out of the ingredients and fill as many as possible). I hope this helps!

Hi, We just made this scrub for shower favors and it smells more of alcohol than it does spearmint / mint– is this suppose to be how it is? Does the alcohol smell wear off ? It is very strong- we only made 1/4 of the recipe to try it and did use all 1/4 of all ingredients- so proportion wise – we did it correctly.
Please respond
Hi June,
These should not smell of alcohol. Are you sure you used mint extract? I’m not sure if you used mint or spearmint, but I recommend using mint extract to give the desired smell.

I just made these for my sisters bridal shower next month! I followed the recipe and somehow I had enough to fill 36 of the small 4 oz jars (same as pic)! I used pink food coloring instead of green to match the bridal shower and I am so excited to give these as favors! After I purchased all of the material and made 96, it cost $1.18/jar! Thanks for sharing!
Hi Brandi!
Awesome! I really appreciate you commenting! I’m so happy you loved the recipe and it worked out for you! I’ve been receiving emails and comments on the amounts this recipe makes, but I’m happy it made more for you than what was expected. This will help others as well. I had leftovers after the 20 jars to make about 25 total jars, but since I’ve been hearing different amounts from people I thought I’d stick to the 20 to stay in the middle. There’s so many factors that go into (i.e. how much you fill and compact the jars, etc.). I hope the bridal shower goes well!

Would you suggest lemon or almond as opposed to mint…
Hi Charlyce,
Lemon or almond scented sugar scrub sounds wonderful! I think that’d be a great scent! I don’t know the exact amount that you would use if you were to substitute the mint though. I would suggest doing drop by drop to make sure it is to your liking.
-Marianela
Essential oils are also an option for scent. Lemongrass was our favorite.
Great suggestion! Thanks Aimee!
-Marianela
Could you do it with lemon and yellow, im doing a baby shower ” What will Baby “Bee” with black, white and yellow
Hi Norma,
Yes! That sounds so sweet! You could do the sugar scrub with yellow food coloring and lemon extract. I would suggest going drop by drop on the food coloring and extract to make sure the color and scent fits to your liking as I’m unsure whether or not the suggested amounts in this mint-to-be recipe will work for your substitutions. It may, but better to be safe than sorry and waste the ingredients! I hope this helps!

Where did you get the sticker paper and little machine to cut them?!
Hi Tayla,
I found both the sticker paper and 2″ circle puncher at Michaels. Here are the links to the exact items I used:
Sticker paper: found here
2″ circle puncher (select 2″ at the drop down menu): found here

Hello,
I’m actually in the midst of making this right now. I did one recipe plus half to make a little bit more and I’m worried that there’s going to be way too much sugar in it? I did 3 cups of coconut oil and am only at 8 cups of sugar and I feel like if I add another 7 cups it’ll basically be all sugar. Can you confirm that it’s supposed to be only two cups of coconut oil to 10 cups of sugar? Thanks!
Hi Lisa,
Yes, 10 cups of sugar and 2 cups of coconut oil is correct for the recipe above. There should be a greater consistency in sugar than the coconut oil, but if you think there’s barely any coconut oil then you can stop at the amount of sugar you are at. Hopefully the photo shown above with the ingredients mixed (in steps 1 ans 2) helps give you a better picture of how it should look.

Can’t wait to make these! Do you know if the sticker template fits the Avery brand 2-inch round labels? I’m trying to save time and money by not buying the hole punch. Thank you!!
Hi Michelle!
Unfortunately, I didn’t work off of a template when designing these labels. I wanted to place as many labels on the page as possible to get the most out of the paper. I’m honestly not sure if the printable will work with an Avery template or not, but I would assume it would not work.

Hello, just wondering if it matters if I use peppermint extract or does it just need to be mint extract?
Hi Britta!
I do not recommend using peppermint extract instead of mint extract. The peppermint extract will give the sugar scrub a totally different scent.
-Marianela
I am getting ready to make this for my daughter’s bridal shower, and reading all the comments. You commented that there was 2 cups of sugar and 10 cups of coconut oil. That is the exact opposite of what the recipe said! Just thought you might want to make the correction! I’m hoping it turns out lovely!!
Thanks for the recipe!!
Hi Becky! Thanks for catching that! Just made the correction in the comment. I hope you love the sugar scrub! It was definitely a hit at my bridal shower! Enjoy!

Hi, I am just wondering if I could substitute Epsom Salt for the sugar?
Hi Tracy,
Yes, you can use Epsom salt. The grain will not be as fine as the sugar, but that’s about the only difference it should make! I hope that was of help to you. Best of luck!
-Marianela
How should I store these after making them? I am going to make these a few days in advance and would like to know if they should be refrigerated?
Thanks!
Hi Sydney,
I think they are best kept at room temperature in a sealed tight container (like a mason jar). My concern is if the coconut oil was to harden when kept in the fridge. I hope this was of help to you! Good luck!
-Marianela
Do you think I can use real mint leaves instead of the extract? I have a giant bush of mint that has taken over my garden and have been wondering what to do with all of it.
Hi Beeran,
Sure! You are more than welcome to use real mint leaves, but I’m not honestly sure how the end result will turn out.
Here’s an article on how to extract the mint oils from your mint leaves, which may be the best option for you!

I hope this helps!

Did you use Regular coconut oil or fractionated coconut oil? Not sure what the difference is when it comes to the scrub.
Hi Dana!
I recommend using regular coconut oil since it’s more of a solid substance than the fractionated coconut oil, which is liquid. Hope this helps! xo-Marianela
My jar of coconut oil that was a solid is now a liquid. I must have stored it in a to warm of a place.. can I still use it even tho it’s a liquid or does it have to be a solid, if it has to be a solid, do I just put it in the fridge?? Trying to make these today, please respond, thank you… Donna
Hi Donna,
Not to worry! I would place the coconut oil jar in the fridge for a little bit to help it solidify. I don’t recommend using the coconut oil at it’s liquid form. Best of luck!
-Marianela
Did you use this exact puncher? It says that it’s 1″, not sure if I should be looking for one that says 2″.
Thank you, Angela
Hi Angela,
Yes, I used this 2″ whole puncher (Select 2″ at the drop down menu for size): http://www.michaels.com/recollections-lever-punch-circle/M10358843.html?dwvar_M10358843_color=White#start=2
Thank you! I’m making these for my daughter’s bridal shower, I think everyone will love them!
How do you get the “mint to be” on the round sticker?
Hi Cairlynn,
I ran 8.5 in. X 11 in. white sticker paper through the printer and printed the downloadable PDF I provided above. I then used a 2″ whole puncher and cut out all of the circles (you can also use scissors and cut them out yourself). I hope this helps!

My sisters shower is in a week …if I made them this weekend they should be okay to sit for a week ???
Hi Jennifer! Yes, they should be perfectly fine to sit for a week! Just make sure you store them at room temperature. Best of luck to the rest of the planning and congratulations to your sister!
Hello! Do you print the labels on any special setting? The colors when printing don’t seem to come out as bold as they look on the screen. Love this idea – thanks so much for the detailed guide!
Hello! The colors on screen will definitely print differently on paper due to on screen being RGB and printing on paper is CMYK. With that said, they should still be printing bold enough for you to see on the colors on paper. Hope this helps! -Marianela

Made these for a bridal shower and LOVE them! Thank you so much for sharing your recipe and the template for the stickers.
Hi Bethany! Yippee!! I’m so happy to hear you loved them! Thanks for commenting! <3
Just hosted a bridal shower for my future daughter-n-law, and cannot tell you how appreciative I am for your blog on these lovely, lovely sugar scrubs; all the women adored them. Placing the link for the labels you made was extra special. They worked like a charm and is what, in my opinion, really sealed the deal (see what I did there?) on making these jars absolutely adorable.
I made 24 jars and made half an extra batch to the original recipe because I wanted to fill the jars with the scrub. When reading the reviews it stated that one batch fill 20 jars loosely and since I had a few more than the 20 and wanted the jars filled to the brim, I went a little over. Suffice it to say, I have extra sugar scrub in my fridge. I think the recipe as written would have been more than enough for my 24 jars.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, for sharing this recipe, links and photos. You did a great job all around and made a bunch of Chicago women very happy. Thanks again!
Hi Beth!
Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback!! I’m so glad you loved the recipe and printable! Honestly, it’s so hard to say the exact amount as you can see from prior comments. BUT I am very happy that you had made enough to fill your jars! I wish you the best with the rest of the planning and congratulations to your daughter-in-law!
I made this recipe and I enjoyed it very much but I substituted spearmint essential oil just a few drops and I used my soap coloring just a few drops to get the minty coloring.
Hi Shel! I love your substitutions and am so happy you loved the end result! Thanks for sharing!
-xo, Marianela
Hey question for you, I bought some peppermint essential oils to use but being dumb didn’t buy enough. How much did you use instead of the mint extract ? I’m thinking not 4 tbsp full but how much would you recommend? Thanks !
Hello, I am having trouble lining up the sticker paper with the 2″ hole punch. Is there a secret to getting them centered?
Thanks,
Angela
Hi Angela,
I trimmed the edges of the paper a little bit so the hole puncher can get closer and cut right on the guidelines. Hopefully this helps!
Marianela
I’m planning to make your scrub for a bridal shower but am questioning 4 tablespoons mint extract. Where do you buy that much? The grocery store just has those little bottles which would be very expensive.
Hi Donna,
The recipe I shared is for a rough total of 20-25 filled jars. Since you are making such a large batch (assuming you’re filling that many jars) you will need 4 tbsp. I was able to find the McCormick Pure Mint extract at Target for $3.39.
Here’s the direct link:
http://www.target.com/p/mccormick-pure-mint-extract-1-oz/-/A-13353209
The bottle contains a total of 1 fl. oz. mint extract so you will need to purchase 2 bottles to make the 4 tbsp. that the recipe calls for (keep in mind that 1 fl. oz. = 2 tbsp).
Hopefully this helps!

Do you think the favors are fine on their own or should I tie a ribbon or additional tag to them? I am curious what others have done. Thanks!
Love this scrub! Made it for my friends hen’s for prizes. I Added a bit of lemon zest since my tree has gone crazy with fruit this year and it just gives a little bit of an extra note to the scent and adds some texture to the jar 🙂
I made these jars back in June for a Bridal Shower luncheon and I wrapped them in tulle and ribbon. I also added a tag on the ribbon that had the bride and groom’s name with the wedding date. I created their names and date on 8 1/2 by 11 paper and used a scallop circle punch to punch them out. Everyone loved them!
